Bone Grafting
Bone Grafting
In order to maximize the outcome of dental implant surgery, some patients may require a bone graft. The need for a bone graft can be where teeth have been lost or the bone shrinks or melts away over time. In some instances there can be bone loss around existing teeth due to infection, gum disease, or other traumas. Previously bone grafting required using large quantities of the patient’s own bone known as autogenous grafts. However, today we use synthetics or processed bone.
While occasionally there is still the need for major autogenous bone grafts to provide a site for dental implants, the most common bone grafting involves one or a combination of the following:
- The Alveolar Ridge Preservation Graft or “Socket Graft”
- The Autogenous Ramus/Chin Graft or “Block Bone Graft”
- The Subantral Graft or “Sinus Lift Procedure”
At your consultation, our surgeons will discuss if you need a bone graft as a pre-requisite to optimize your treatment plan. The technique and materials used will be determined at your consultation appointment and our surgeons will recommend the best treatment options available based on your unique situation.
